Food, Glorious Food!

Thai food was a great diplomat for its country. Thai food is my favorite and was one of the first reason I became interested in Thailand. We are SO glad we visited, and not only for the food.

Here are some beautiful and delicious foods we had in Chiang Mai:

Miang Kham
Lettuce (and some other, lemony leaf), with shrimp, peanuts, shallot, hot pepper, ginger & lime, to roll up and dip in tamarind sauce and toasted cocount.

Khao tung Nah tung
dried rice patties (like crackers) with a pork & peanut dip.

Martha Butt demonstrates how to eat the Miang Kham

Annette's favorite ice cream shop-- Bud's of San Francisco! We got practically one scoop of every flavor. A nice treat on such a hot day.

Kuay Tiao Ped
Duck noodles (in mild soup)

Khai Mun Kai Thod
chicken and rice cooked in chicken broth with a great sauce--green, spicy and herby.

Kuay Tio Rad Na Mao
flat rice oodles with thick gravy and pork

"ping pong"
little sesame balls-- puffed up fried dough with a bit of coconut paste in the center

Breakfast at Annette's, fried rice with egg, guava juice, & passion fruit.

typical Thai condiments served alongside meal: fish sauce, sugar, ground chilies, vinegar with green chilies. So you can adjust your meal to your ideal combination of salty, sweet, spicy or sour. Those four are the hallmarks of Thai food--so good!

Satay
Chicken kabobs marinated in curry yogurt, with spicy peanut dipping sauce.

Khao soi
Northern Thai specialty--red curry with noodles and fried noodles.

Pad See-ew
wide rice noodles with basil, vegetables, and squid (and lots of little pepper berries--green things that look like grapes--are the precursor to black pepercorns--still quite spicy).

I don't remember the name of these dessert dishes!
Basically coconut milk based--one has tapioca balls and sweet corn, the other fried bananas.

Crepe with banana and nutella

fried chicken heads!
(we didn't actually eat these, just saw them at the market)

coconut sticky rice with mango
the BEST!
(this is actually the one we made in our cooking class. we ate this everywhere we could!)

Khanom Thuy
traditional sweets made with sugar, coconut milk, & fruits or flowers for flavor and color

One last meal with Annette at the airport before we left for Laos. It was a good one too!
Green curry with noodles (left & top), sauteed morning glory leaves (top right), khao soi (left) and pad see-ew (right).

I've had the leafy dish with all the condiments at a Thai restaurant recently! Those photos look great! Now you can come home and teach me how to make mango sticky rice! I don't know how to make that yet. And morning glory leaves?? Are those like the ones we used to have at our house? That climbed up the wall and had purple flowers?
